Caries is a condition common among both - children and adults.
Diagnosis of caries requires treatment (cleaning of damaged tissue and placing a filling), as this process progresses rapidly to deeper tooth tissues, consequently affecting the pulp (where nerves are located) and periodontal area. 
If not treated properly, such conditions may result in pulpitis and periodontitis. These complications take a considerable amount of treatment time and obviously are more expensive.
Caries can damage the root of the tooth which may lead to tooth extraction.
